Early detection is key to beating skin cancer, and one of the most effective ways to stay ahead is by doing monthly skin checks at home. It only takes 10 minutes and could save your life. Here’s a step-by-step guide from Spotting Cancer to help you master this life-saving habit.
What You Need:
- A full-length mirror
- A hand-held mirror
- Good lighting
- A chair or stool
- Review your previous body chart
What to Look For:
Use the ABCDEs of Skin Cancer and watch for new growths, sores that don’t heal, or anything unusual.
Step-by-Step Skin Check and Compare to Previous Scan:
- Start with your face Check your nose, lips, ears, and around your eyes. Don’t forget behind the ears.
- Examine your scalp Use a blow dryer and mirror or have a loved one help part your hair to check your scalp.
- Inspect your hands and arms Look at the tops and palms of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. Continue up your wrists and forearms – both front and back.
- Stand in front of a mirror Check your elbows, underarms, neck, chest, and torso. Women should lift breasts to check the skin underneath.
- Use a hand mirror Check the back of your neck, shoulders, and back. Use the full-length mirror for a better view.
- Sit to inspect your lower body Check your legs, thighs, shins, ankles, feet, soles, toes, and between and under toenails. Use a hand mirror to view your buttocks and genitals.
Doing this once a month and noting any changes can be a powerful tool in spotting cancer early.
